AI Agents: Why So Many People Are Starting to Talk About Them

| Vincent Hoogsteder

If you follow tech news, you cannot avoid Artificial Intelligence (AI). Within that broad category, one type is getting a lot of attention lately: AI agents. They are not the chatbots you know. An agent takes a more active role in how AI works inside a business and in daily routines. Below I explain what agents are, where they can be used, and what they mean for data privacy and security, especially when they run on your own private cloud infrastructure.

The Evolution of AI Agents

The idea of an agent is as old as AI itself, going back to the early days of machine learning and rule-based automation. The goal was always to replicate human decision-making. Early systems were rigid, built for one specific task, and could not cope with situations nobody had foreseen. Today's agents are a step towards systems that act with some autonomy, learn from their environment and make decisions as things happen.

What Sets AI Agents Apart

Conversational AI like ChatGPT generates a human-like response to whatever you type. An agent is built to perform tasks, make decisions and work together with other agents on more complex goals. Answering a question is only the start; the agent then goes and does something with the answer.

Take an agent that manages a supply chain. It keeps an eye on inventory levels, predicts shortages and orders new stock on its own, weighing cost against delivery times. Another agent might oversee quality control, flagging products that fail to meet standards and rerouting them before they reach the customer. That may sound far fetched, and in most cases we are not there yet. But agents can already do the bulk of this work and only need a person to step in on the critical decisions, like placing the actual order. Think of it as a very junior team member.

Practical Applications in Business

In everyday business terms, that looks like this:

  • Customer Service: an agent can handle customer inquiries end to end, resolving the issue, scheduling a follow-up and spotting upsell opportunities based on customer history and preferences.
  • Human Resources: an agent might answer routine questions about policies, process leave requests and help onboard new employees by scheduling training sessions and managing paperwork.
  • Operations: an agent can adjust routes in real time, manage fleet maintenance schedules and negotiate rates with shipping providers, without anyone asking it to.

In each case the agent is a proactive part of the process and takes a real load off the people involved, for routine tasks as well as complex ones.

The Potential of AI Agents

It is hard to see where this ends. As the technology matures, agents will get better at working with each other and with the people around them. That could lead to business processes that run on their own, where people set the goals and the boundaries and no longer manage the day-to-day.

Data Privacy and Security

These agents are also a risk to your data. Like employees, they might share confidential information with other parties and other agents. This is a big argument for running agents on your own cloud infrastructure: your data never leaves an environment you control, which takes away many of the risks that come with cloud-based AI services.

It keeps sensitive information where it belongs, and it lets you tailor compliance to local data protection rules, which helps if you operate in more than one jurisdiction.

What We're Doing at Mozaik

We are building our own internal AI agent platform at Mozaik, with the aim of automating as many repetitive tasks in our marketing, sales and development process as we can. We want our workflows to run more smoothly so the team can spend its time on the creative and difficult problems. We will share more about this in upcoming posts.

AI agents are a real shift in how we think about AI in the workplace and how we deploy it. As the tools get more capable and easier to plug into different parts of a business, they will change what companies can get done with AI, well beyond making current operations more efficient.

More soon on how we are using this technology ourselves, and how you might do the same in your organization.
